The alphabets stand for quarters -

Scientists recover complete dinosaur skeleton

TOKYO—Japanese and Mongolian scientists have successfully recovered the complete skeleton of a 70-million-year-old young dinosaur, a nature museum announced Thursday.
The scientists uncovered a Tarbosaurus—related to the giant carnivorous Tyrannosaurus—from a chunk of sandstone they dug up in August, 2006 in the Gobi Desert in Mongolia, said Takuji Yokoyama, a spokesman for the Hayashibara Museum of Natural Sciences, a co-organizer of the joint research project.
"We were so lucky to have found remains that turned out to be a complete set of all the important parts," he said.
After two years of careful preparatory work, scientists found that the fossilized skeleton only lacked neck bones and the tip of the tail.
Young dinosaur skeletons are hard to find in good condition because they often are destroyed by weather decay or because they were torn apart by predators. The latest find would be a major step toward discovering the growth and development of dinosaurs, Yokoyama said.
The fossil, believed to have died at age 5, measured about 6.6 feet long, he said. Adult dinosaurs of the species are believed to have grown up to 40 feet.
The dinosaur, whose gender was unknown, came from a geological layer created about 70 million years ago in the late Cretaceous period.
The Japanese scientists and colleagues from the Center of Paleontology under the Mongolian Academy of Sciences have been jointly conducting dinosaur .

Most investors tend to crib when the market is going down. I find this very strange, because most of the money that I make is made when the markets go down and I buy.

When I buy a stock cheap, I am keeping my downside limited and am leaving more room for the upside. One of the most important things about getting substantial returns on your investments is not really selling but buying.

Several people pay undue importance on selling at the right time, but fail to give importance to buying. For example let us say you invested in Unitech in 2002. Would that decision have more value or would the decision to sell in 2007 or 2008 have more value? Yes, there might be some minor differences in the stock price between 2007 and 2008, but most of the money would have been made when you bought into Unitech after finding out about their huge land bank which was relatively unknown at that time. Every Rs 10,000 put at that time would be worth over Rs 1 crore today.

If you have done your buying wisely, selling would not really be something to think about. Warren Buffett had once said that investing is simple but not easy. No matter how much people are told about buying when markets are going down, they still will continue to panic. No matter how much people are told to stay balanced and not rejoice because markets are going up, they will still continue to rejoice unnecessarily.

For example a few days ago when the markets were going down, I bought more into a small company which will benefit from India's huge infrastructure demand. It is much cheaper than what it was say two weeks ago and that is why I bought into it more. I bought into it simply because of fundamentals and the huge business opportunity available. Now the irony is that when such companies are available at cheap prices, very few people will look at them. But when after a few years they quote at prices several times of today, people will rush behind them and say things like Rakesh Jhunjhunwala holds it, let us buy into it. They forget that Rakesh Jhunjhunwala bought the stock much cheaper than what they are buying it at. Once again does it mean that since I bought it today, it won't go down tomorrow? Of course not,it can certainly go down or go up in terms of its stock price, but what we can do is try to make sure that we are investing in a company whose fundamentals we understand.

Over the years after making mistakes I have learnt a few basic principles which even though might sound simple are not always easy. One of them is that it is best to buy when every analyst and reporter is talking about doom.

We do have challenging time with crude oil moving up as well as inflation all across the world charging ahead. The Indian rupee has depreciated quite fast and lots of our foreign exchange is being used to fund the rising oil bill. But the world has been through more difficult phases and this too shall pass.

A few sectors will surely be affected by this, however there are several sectors which don't have a lot to do with all this. Why not look at such sectors? Domestic consumption is rising and I personally like companies which can benefit from domestic growth.

Held at a suburban five-star, this was no ordinary college fashion show, for although the clothes were designed by the graduating students, they were showcased to the world by some of the city’s top models including Mugdha Godse, Shonal Rawat, Sucheta Sharma, Alecia Raut and Arohi Mishra.

The students strongly believe that fashion constantly changes, and inventions and innovations are an integral part of the industry. And creative inventions filled this fashionable night, with an equally creative show choreographed by Achla Sachdev. So, themes as diverse as the agony of silence to aqua to caravan mesmerised the roomfull of guests that included designers Rocky S, Lascelles Symons and Anita Dongre and fashion store owner Pradeep Hirani, who was later seen in conversation with Vinay Pasricha, Chairman of the college. What caught everyone’s attention was the deliberate use of fasteners; the garments, bags and accessories all had a unique usage of zips and velcro.

Have you ever experienced a day when in the morning you felt great, but after lunch, you felt down and tired? What if we told you that eating certain foods could improve your mood, provide uplifting energy and make you feel like a fresh daisy? The key to understanding the connection between the food we eat and our mood and level of alertness, lies in knowing a little about how the brain functions. The brain communicates by chemical substances passed from one nerve cell to the next. These chemicals, called neurotransmitters, are made in the brain from the food we eat. The neurotransmitters that are most sensitive to diet and influential in affecting the mood are serotonin, nor epinephrine and dopamine. Dopamine and nor epinephrine are alertness chemicals. When they are produced we think and react more quickly, we feel more motivated, we are more attentive and overall, we are more mentally energetic. Serotonin is a calming and relaxing chemical. When produced, feelings of stress and tension decrease. Now that you have a better understanding of the role neurotransmitters play in brain function, let’s look at the relationship between these neurotransmitters and the foods we eat.

Foods that make you feel alert: The best way to eat for alertness is to have meals that contain protein, are low in fat, and have carbohydrates that won’t drag you down. In the afternoon your brain’s supply of dopamine and nor epinephrine begins to wane. When you supply the tyrosine (from eating protein), your brain will be ready to make it into more of the two alertness neurotransmitters (dopamine and nor epinephrine). Please do not avoid carbohydrates, as it is your main source of energy, especially the B group which is the energy-giving vitamin. Therefore, have a combination of complex carbohydrates, fibre (vegetables and salads) and a bit of protein. Some healthy protein-packed foods are: fish, sprouts, nuts, pulses, low fat paneer, skim or low-fat milk, low-fat yoghurt. Lemons: The smell of lemons can induce the feeling of alertness. So, add lemon to all your food. Apples, nachni, rajma, and broccoli: These foods contain boron, which is responsible for hand-eye co-ordination, attention and short-term memory. Boron-rich foods also maintain healthy bone and blood-sugar levels.

Foods that make you feel energetic for a longer time as they are low in glycemic index: Low-glycemic carbohydrates: Brown rice, sweet potato, nachni, bajra, oats. High-glycemic carbohydrates should be avoided: Sugar, white bread, rice cakes, wheat crackers, bagel, instant rice, rice, pasta.

Foods that make you smart: Prunes — they contain twice the antioxidants of most other fruits. Antioxidant-rich diets disable reactive oxygen molecules linked to memory loss and mental deterioration. They prevent mood swings. As they are low in glycematic index, they supply energy for a longer time. They are also high in fibre, prevent constipation, maintain blood pressure levels being high in potassium and an excellent source of iron. Low iron causes fatigue. Look for California prunes as they have no sugar added.

Foods that make you feel energised: Oranges, apples, and yoghurt — these foods are slow digesting carbohydrates and can supply a steady source of fuel for your body. Sunflower seeds contain magnesium which helps maintain normal muscle and nerve function, and keeps heart rhythm steady and bones strong. It is also involved in energy metabolism and protein synthesis. Just a handful of sunflower seeds will give you half of your daily magnesium needs. Foods that make you happy: Bananas: Bananas contain vitamin B6, which is known to build serotonin levels. They contain no fat, and are available everywhere. Nuts: Walnuts (Kashmiri) are high in antioxidants, omega 3 fatty acids, prevent ageing, and are excellent sources of vitamin E. Pistachios (Californian) are low in glycemic index, high in vitamin B and fibre, low in fat and maintain blood sugar levels. Almonds are high in antioxidants and vitamin E. Dark chocolate: This treat releases pleasure-enhancing endorphins into the brain and also contains phenyl ethylamine, a stimulant associated with love. Hence, it makes you feel good. The higher the content of cocoa, the better you feel. It’s cocoa which contains the chemicals. Head for the darkest chocolate. While all of the above will help you feel better throughout the day, there are also foods you should avoid if you find that you’re feeling sluggish more often than you’d like. Water: At least eight glasses a day is the highest pick-me-up. Many times fatigue is related to thirst and not hunger. So, reach out for water. Avoid large, high-fat meals. Fats stay in the stomach longer, diverting blood away from your brain, muscles, and other tissues, which in turn can make you feel sluggish for up to six hours. Have at least one iron-rich food per day. Iron helps transport oxygen to your tissues. Good sources of iron include prunes Don’t eat too little. A low caloric intake leads to fatigue and irritation. Watch your intake of alcohol and coffee. Alcohol is a sedative that can also cause dehydration. Coffee can pep you up in the short term, but can cause you to drop like a ton of bricks later on. Avoid white sugar and white flour. It leeches the body of Vitamin B and calcium, causes constipation, and white sugar causes restlessness, lack of concentration and a quick feeling of fatigue.

Passive smoking (also known as environmental tobacco smoke (ETS), involuntary smoking or second hand smoke) occurs when the exhaled and ambient smoke from one person's cigarette is inhaled by other people. Non-smokers exposed to second hand smoke are at greater risk for many of the health problems associated with direct smoking.
In 1992, the Journal of the American Medical Association published a review of the evidence available from epidemiological and other studies regarding the relationship between second hand smoke and heart disease and estimated that passive smoking was responsible for 35,000 to 40,000 deaths per year in the United States in the early 1980s1.
Non-smokers living with smokers have about a 25 per cent increase in risk of death from heart attack and are also more likely to suffer a stroke, and some research suggests that risks to non-smokers may be even greater than this estimate. One recent study in the British Medical Journal found that exposure to second hand smoke increases the risk of heart disease among non-smokers by as much as 60 percent!2.
Passive smoking is especially risky for children and babies and can cause low birth weight babies, sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS), bronchitis, pneumonia, and middle ear infections.Some controversy has attended efforts to estimate the specific risk of lung cancer related to passive smoking. The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in 1993 issued a report estimating that 3,000 lung cancer related deaths in the US were caused by passive smoking every year. Tobacco industry lobbyists, such as the Alexis de Tocqueville Institution, and industry-funded researchers, such as S. Fred Singer, aggressively attacked the EPA study as "junk science".
In 2002, a group of 29 experts from 12 countries convened by the Monographs Programme of the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) of the World Health Organization reviewed all significant published evidence related to tobacco smoking and cancer. It concluded its evaluation of the carcinogenic risks associated with involuntary smoking, with second-hand smoke also being classified as carcinogenic to humans3.
An earlier WHO epidemiology study also found "weak evidence of a dose-response relationship between risk of lung cancer and exposure to spousal and workplace ETS". The fact that the evidence was described as "weak" has been interpreted by the tobacco industry and its supporters as evidence that the ETS-lung cancer link has been "disproven".
More precisely, the "weakness" of the evidence stems from the fact that the risk of ETS for individuals is small relative to the very high risk of actually smoking, making it more difficult to quantify through epidemiology. In addition to epidemiology, moreover, several other types of scientific evidence (including animal experiments, chemical constituent analysis of ETS, and human metabolic studies) support the WHO and EPA conclusions.Most experts believe that moderate, occasional exposure to second hand smoke presents a low cancer risk to non-smokers, but the risk is more likely to be significant if non-smokers work in an environment where cigarette smoke is prevalent. For this reason, many countries (such as Ireland) and jurisdictions (like New York State) now prohibit smoking in public buildings. Many office buildings contain specially ventilated smoking areas; some are required by law to provide them.

LONDON (Reuters) - The government launched a three-month public consultation on Saturday on how to cut the number of people smoking in Britain.
Removing branding and logos from cigarette packets, making retailers sell cigarettes from under the counter and banning the advertising of smoking paraphernalia, such as cigarette papers, are some of the measures proposed by the Department of Health.
Abolishing packs of 10, to cut the number of young people taking up the habit, and restricting youngsters' access to cigarette vending machines are also being considered.
The take-up of smoking among young people is lower than a decade ago, but more than 200,000 people aged under 16 start smoking every year.
They are three times more likely to die of cancer than people who start smoking in their mid-20s.
"Protecting children from smoking is a government priority and taking away temptation is one way to do this," Public Health Minister Dawn Primarolo said on Saturday.
"If banning brightly coloured packets, removing cigarettes from display and removing the cheap option of a pack of 10 helps save lives, then that is what we should do -- but we want to hear everyone's views first."
Smoking-related disease kills 87,000 people a year, and despite a drop in the number of smokers by 1.9 million in the past decade, smoking remains the biggest killer in England.
Smoke-related illness costs the NHS between 1.4 and 1.7 billion pounds a year.

Last July, England followed the rest of the UK in banning smoking in enclosed public places. Bans were introduced in Scotland in 2006, and in Wales and Northern Ireland in 2007.
Since the ban was imposed in England the number of people using NHS stop-smoking services has increased by 28 percent, while the number of smokers in Britain has declined by 2 percent to 22 percent of the population.

Here is the reason.
Why Newton Committed Suicide.....
Once, Newton came to India and watched a few Tamil movies that had his
head spinning. He was convinced that all his logic and laws in physics
were just a huge pile of junk and apologized for everything he had done.
In the movie of Rajanikanth, Newton was confused to such an extent that
he went paranoid. Here are a few scenes
1) Rajanikanth has a Brain Tumor which, according to the doctors can't
be cured and his death is imminent. In one of the fights, Rajanikanth is
shot in the head. To everybody's surprise, the bullet passes through his
ears taking away the tumor along with it and he is cured! Long Live Rajanikanth!
2) In another movie, Rajanikanth is confronted with 3 gangsters.
Rajanikanth has a gun but unfortunately only one bullet and a knife.
Guess, what he does?
He throws the knife at the middle gangster? & shoots the bullet towards
the knife. The knife cuts the bullet into 2 pieces, which kills both the
gangsters on each side of the middle gangster & the knife kills the
middle one.
3) Rajanikanth is chased by a gangster. Rajanikanth has a revolver but
no bullets in it. Guess, what he does. Nah? not even in your remotest imaginations.
He waits for the gangster to shoot. As soon as the gangster shoots, Rajanikanth
opens the bullet compartment of his revolver and catches the bullet. Then,
he closes the bullet compartment and fires his gun.
Bang... the gangster dies...
This was too much for our Newton to take! He was completely shaken and
decided to go back. But he happened to see another movie for one last time,
and thought that at least one movie would follow his theory of physics.
The whole movie goes fine and Newton is happy that all in the world hasn't
changed. Oops, not so fast!
The 'climax' finally arrives.
Rajanikanth gets to know that the villain is on the other side of a very
high wall. So high that Rajanikanth can't jump even if he tries like one
of those superman techniques that our heroes normally use. Rajanikanth
has to desperately kill the villain because it's the climax.
( Newton dada is smiling since it is virtually impossible?)
Rajanikanth suddenly pulls two guns from his pockets. He throws one gun
in the air and when the gun has reached above the height of the wall, he
uses the second gun and shoots at the trigger of the first gun in air.
The first gun fires off and the villain is dead.

Myopia or near-sightness means that either the eye is too long or the optics are too strong. In either case the light from a distance object focuses in front of the retina. Minus or concave lenses are used to move the image back on the retina when viewing distance objects.
The vision may be corrected with glasses, contact lenses or refractive surgery. Clearly if your parents are nearsighted you have a better chance of becoming nearsighted. Identical twins have similar refractive errors.
Myopia is much more common in people with a higher education. There are those who claim that since people with myopia can’t see clearly at a distance, they become more interested in things up close where they can see clearly, e.g. reading, computers.
The fallacy of this argument is that once myopic patients are corrected with glasses or contact lenses, distance vision is clear. Most myopia develops during periods of accelerated growth (8-19). Previously myopia stopped by the early twenties. Today, we see more myopia progressing in the late twenties or thirties in those patients who spend a preponderous amount of time reading and computer use.

ii. Exercise your eyes
Dr C.SHAH, a practising ophthalmologist (eye specialist) based in Mumbai, says that regular work hours should be infused with short breaks. During such breaks, he suggests a small and easy exercise: “First, blink your eyes several times. While you keep your eyes closed, roll your eyeballs both clockwise and anticlockwise and take a deep breath. Gradually open your eyes while releasing your breath. This exercise lasts for a minute and you can repeat it three times before getting back to work.” It serves as a good workout for the eyes.
iii. Look awayWhile working for long hours, look at distant objects either in your office or outside. Looking at a distant object and then returning to your task helps your eyes focus better. Try taking such visual breaks for about five to 10 minutes every hour.
Know your contact lenses“Ideally, a person who uses lenses should wear it for not more than 10-12 hours a day and occasionally for 14 hours a day,” suggests Dr SHAH.Never wear your contact lenses while swimming. The pool water houses various micro-organisms as there are several people using it. This may lead to fungal infections in the eyes. In addition, the chlorine in the water can damage your contact lenses.”Lenses are like sponge, making them susceptible to attracting dirt,” says Dr SHAH
